Vincent Van Gogh's still life drawing

This piece is drawn by Vincent Van Gogh and he drew this in December 1881. I don’t know the title of this piece but I chose this artwork because I personally I Van Gogh’s work and it seemed to have some elements of art that we have been learning so far.

I think he chose dark because if he chooses dark background, the object will stand out. It is interesting that the artist also used different lines and shapes within the shading. It is also interesting that he used the gradation between the left parts of the piece to the right part. It goes light to dark. He used big object in the middle and smaller objects around which is cool.

  1. What about the objects he chose to represent? What does this say about the artist's interests? (if you're unsure, look up some details on the artist-- even wikipedia will give you some important basics) Does the composition suggest a narrative or not? Do you think these were things he had in his studio or were they things he borrowed or bought specifically for this painting? What do you suppose is in the clay pot?

  2. Hat! I like the hat. I wonder if Van Gogh liked hats? I dislike the flatness and dullness of the colors, almost as if the objects which are still are also dead. In a manner of speaking, they are dead, as they do not contain life such as a plant or an animal would. Also, the lines are soft and seems like he's uncertain of the objects' nature or form, or if he's in the dark painting.

  3. the objects he chose are interesting. a hat, what looks like a pipe, a bottle of some sort, a clay pot, and a basket of some sort. looks like it was just random objects around his work area, but i'm sure he had some theme or reason behind each object.

  4. The artist depicting still life objects often chose simple things from everyday life. I'm almost sure that in this painting the hat belongs to Van Gogh as well as the pipe.
