I would like for everyone to look at still life for their blog post this week. Some artists to consider for still life are Georges Braques, Matisse, Dutch still life in general (from the 16th-18th c), Picasso, and Jean Simeon Chardin. Still life is a prevalent genre of painting in Western art with a rich tradition, so many of the artists you come across will likely be from the 16th-19th c, which is just fine for this assignment. Let me know if you have any problems.
Example:
Jean-Simeon Chardin, La Raie, 1725-26
I have to comment this one, I love this. A cat in a still life? Is it a cat statue? It makes you wonder how they captured it almost as if in a photograph, but not. Also, whatever that thing is in the center really bothers me. Perhaps because it lacks identity or a clear structure, which is something common in a still life -- a set of structured elements all correlating somehow.
ReplyDeletethis is an interesting piece. it looks like the cats made a mess in the work area but it looked so good the artist decided to make the cats pose and paint it. the cat statue, if thats what that is on the right, is an interesting object. i like how the artist decided to put a white cloth down first then place the statue on top. and the middle, i have no idea what that could be.
